Fergie set to call on Carrick as Manchester United defenders give boss cause for concern

Sir Alex Ferguson is set to turn to Michael Carrick once again as the Manchester United manager copes with a crisis in defence.
Nemanja Vidic turned out for 45 minutes against Barcelona on Wednesday and Rio Ferdinand played most of the match but Ferguson is seriously lacking cover for his first-choice pairing.
The Premier League opener against Everton on Monday week will come just too soon for Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling is out for three months and Phil Jones has picked up an injury during pre-season.

Carrick played at the back against Barca and the midfielder could be used there again.
Ferguson told United's website: 'Evans is recovering from an operation. Smalling is out for three months.
Jones got a muscle injury in his back and was sent home from Norway. 'So the area we're concerned about is centre-back. Evans won't be ready for the start of the season. He won't be far away but he won't be ready.
'Smalling is out and I can't give you an update with Jones because we've not fully diagnosed that.
'But Michael Carrick was absolutely brilliant (in Sweden) with his passing the ball and his interceptions. He was fantastic.'
